CITY OF ROCKS, NEW MEXICO
The design for the City of Rocks visitors center complements the unusual rock formations found in the state park without competing with them. When approaching the park, the long, curving rock entry wall is nearly invisible and blends in with the rock formations in the background. However, at the walls entrance, the view of the rock formations disappear, only to dramatically re-appear again when moving through the wall and along a perforated steel-plate covered colonnade. The colonnade frames the view of the rocks and leads the visitor to pathways that weave through the formations. Flanking the colonnade are the visitor center buildings which includes an area for interpretive display, restrooms with showers, a vending machine area and office space for staff.
