SANTA
FE, NEW MEXICO
The Temple Beth Shalom complex includes a 12,000 square foot synogogue, social hall, community rooms and school. The seating arrangement in the Sanctuary is oriented at a 45 degree angle to the Bima, which reinforces the feeling of community during services. This seating arrangement is reflected in the angle of the tent-like structure of the hipped roof and the convergence of the wood trusses over the lecturn. In the Sanctuary a four foot band of glazing separates the roof from the walls to admit daylight into the space while allowing the congregation a view of the sky. Fixed louvers spanning between the roof trusses control and reflect direct sunlight to illuminate the ceiling. The school and administration building is located to form an edge and enclose a central plaza which is the main gathering place for students and congregants. The entire school is daylit to provide a pleasant learning environment and reduce operating costs.
